There's nothing wrong with a head nod. It's the same as saying hi. If they don't understand why you do this - then tell them.

Ok by me. I nod to strangers too. I'm not good at saying hi to complete strangers.

You are responding to other people and acknowledging them....everyone has their own personal way of saying "Hello" I think nods are just the same as saying "Hello"..........Keep nodding!!

If that's an acqutainance, I'd acknowledge. If not, I ask "Do I know you?"
