Our resident dog Madison (female, age 2, 15 lbs.) is great interacting with people and dogs, though she tends to be submissive. We recently got a new puppy, Quincy, who is male, 4 months, and about 15 lbs. Madison has played intermittently with Quincy, though she prefers to watch him play while she's sitting on the couch undisturbed. We have paid equal amounts of attention to the dogs.

I understand that resident dogs tend to need to adjust to a new puppy. However, yesterday Madison seemed to sort of "shut down." A normally happy dog, she has refused to make eye contact with me, she yips and whimpers at me if I touch her, and spends most of the day sitting in her crate. She hasn't eaten at all today and is uninterested in spending time with me, even if the new puppy is away in another room, sleeping. I'm starting to get really worried about her!

Is this a normal reaction or is something else going on? If anyone has any suggestions or advice, I would really appreciate it.

Also:

1) Madison has been receiving extra attention, going on walks and car rides.

2) Madison had a rabies and distemper shot on Monday (and a vet exam, which showed she is perfectly healthy!).

So unless something happened between Monday evening and today that caused her health to worsen, she should be fine.

One thing I'm wondering about is: is Madison's behavior change a reaction to her shots OR a reaction to the new puppy OR both?!

Also: how should I help her deal with this??

it could be jealousy, but i think it has more to do with the vaccinations, they should tell you that after getting their shots they might develop a reaction to it and you should check the dog for 24 to 48 hours, they might get a fever, and/or pain tot the general area of the vaccination, unless she looks sick to you, she should be good as new after this symptoms pass.

Has Madison been acting this way since the day you recieved Quincy? How many days have you have Quincy? After shots dogs can show some down time for a few days, but not more then a week. As for Madison being despressed that she wasn't enough dog for you and you needed to get another, help her become the big sister and best friend to Quincy. You need for them to be happy together before she will be happy with you again. Be sure not to force her to do things, but do have them together, like on the car rides, or during the walks. This should really help.

Vet suggestion required right this moment. there's a extreme threat that the mum will turn on the doggies and kill them, exceedingly if she is a universal time mum. She might nicely be depressed or there might nicely be an underlying problem that's making her experience sick. Bottle feeding might nicely be required however the vet will propose the superb way forward.

her larthogicness is probably a reaction to the shots, but i think the rest is because of the puppy,,,,,,,,,, SHE'S JEALOUS...... im going through the same thing right now with my two dogs i thinks she just wants to be your only pet and own the whole yard...she doesn't want to share and she'd rather relax on the couch with you than play with the hyperactive puppy.... surprisingly my grown dog ( a lab) is really tolerant of the puppy ( a jack russell terrier) who loves to nip her without stopping occasionally she growls at her and mouths her but that is just the part of establishing who is boss....
