I can tell you that Hollywood and a lot of parts of Los Angeles
have been deteriorating due to lack of appreciation for the history, and concern over preservation efforts. LA is the first port of arrival to a lot of recent immigrants who start out their american dreams with very little money in hand. Building and preservation, neighborhood cleanliness and safety, these agendas merit the lowest priority in their lives. Who wants to attend a neighborhood meeting or talk about the Art Deco renovation to a public library when they can't understand English and have to work two jobs to feed four children?
Everyone who said bad things about the questioner should take a look at the google satellite map of Los Angeles. This is a
relatively new, planned city-the third largest in the US, every square block is completely occupied with houses, apartments and shopping malls, leaving very little space for nature conservation and recreation.
Sure the weather's sunny and you don't have to worry about which overcoat to wear. But how do you feel when you breathe toxic air from all those exhaust pipes and look overhead and see the orange-grey blanket of smog? The city's infrastructure and roadways will no longer be able to cope in the near future. Didn't freeway drive-bys originate in LA? Face it, LA is slowly decaying and erasing the humanity within its residents. Wake up, LA. You forgot already that a lot of adjoining cities are still trying to secede from LA county because they see this coming.

It's too bad you stayed in the "wrong" place; perhaps that was a mistake on your part for not doing the research????!!! Not to mention your pessimistic attitude and unrealistic expectations.
I live in a SUBURB of LA (about 30 mins from the city of LA) and I absolutely love it. We have explored moving to other states but I do not want to leave here b/c there is so much to do, see, go, the list goes on and on. HOWEVER I will tell you that I would not live in Hollywood - although I do go shopping there. I just know where to go and what to stay away from because I have asked and done my research. I have traveled to many cities around the world and the US and there are both beautiful and bad parts of each city I have been to.
And, I will be going to San Fran for vacation next week; I've been there before. I know that there are great places to see but I also know to expect to see homeless people (as the Trojan dude said), trash, no parking, and all the other things that come along with a city or town!!
If you do come back, I suggest that you open up a bit and go to other places, not just Hollywood - then you can make an educated judgment about LA.

You fall into the same trap most tourists/non-Angelenos fall into...
Hollywood IS a dump. Everyone in L.A. knows that. People think it's glamorous but they are just mistaking it for Beverly Hills. Hollywood is full of prostitutes and weirdos, and it's filthy, I know.
But consider how big of a city Los Angeles is..!
You don't judge L.A. based on Hollywood. You won't find celebrities in Hollywood. Read on with this link: http://www.seeing-stars.com/li
ve/BeverlyHills.shtml
Here's what is says:
"Tourists arriving in Southern California often confuse Hollywood with Beverly Hills.
Many visitors come to Hollywood expecting to find a gleaming city filled with movie stars, posh restaurants, grand mansions and expensive shopping areas. They are, of course, very disappointed; the actual suburb of Hollywood is far from glamorous. The real "Hollywood" is a state of mind, not a place; it's not so much a city as it is shorthand for the general movie and entertainment industry."
...anyways, try places in Los Angeles like Malibu or Beverly Hills. It's clean, and not a "garbage pit".
The price tag of living in Malibu, Beverly Hills, or other affluent communities, NOT including Hollywood, is about $2 million for a single family home.

So, you stayed in Hollywood for 4 days and made a judgment against the entire City of Los Angeles? That's like staying near Market and Van Ness for 4 days and saying SF is full of homeless people who poop on the sidewalk.
At least you won't be coming back... makes room for the rest of us. Do the world a favor and don't visit any other city.

well for one thing, it has 4 million people and is the second largest city in the nation. that's a start. the area is also one of the largest financial regions in the world. there are countless things to see and do in the city and surrounding areas, the weather is nice year round and people enjoy the many beaches. it is also very culturally diverse. there are plenty of reasons why it is such a popular area

I think it just depends on what part of town you are visiting. I love shopping at Hollywood and Highland in Hollywood.
On the other hand I was born and raised in the Bay and think Market Street could use some cleaning up and repairs.
It just depends on your view of things.

You're just bummed cuz you have to go back to your cold, dreary, wet, expensive city...real cool architecture up there but damn it is always freezing!! Wouldn't you rather be having a drink in the sunny sand in Malibu? Or how about hanging out with the stars in Hollywood hills? How about West Hollywood, West L.A. and Westwood...alll very nice, clean, bustling areas to hang out, shop, see entertainment... At least you can drive around in the canyons and mountains here...besides, every city has its ghetto parts..and Hollywood is no gem but its better than Compton or Inglewood or worse places in the U.S. like DETROIT, OR THE LEAST SAFEST CITY ACCORDING TO US CONSUMER SURVEYS, ST LOUIS...Why don't you go there next time...hater...

Fool! I wish everyone that came to see Los Angeles would go to that pit hollywood and then turn around and go home. Meanwhile I will enjoy my view of the Santa Monica Mountians as it streches out to the sea.
