U.S. military advisors first became involved in Vietnam as early as 1950, when they began to assist French colonial forces. In 1956, these advisors assumed full responsibility for training the Army of the Republic of Vietnam or ARVN. Large numbers of American combat troops began to arrive in 1965 and the last left the country in 1973.

The starting years would differ from person to person, depending on who you talk to. The End came in 1975, and I believe everyone can agree on that date.
The first combat units were sent into Vietnam in 1965, however advisors were sent in by JFK as early as 1960. For year ending1962 the US had lost 102 advisors.
As early as 1954, three or four Marines entered Vietnam, to help the South develop and train a Vietnam Marine Corps. This was even before Dien Bien Pu, where the French were defeated and sent home with their tail between their legs.
The earliest conflicts started at the end of WWII, when Vietnam wanted it's independence from France and no longer wished to be a French Colony. Ho Chi Mien had approached Truman about helping Vietnam secure independence from the French, and was turned down for US help in this matter.
That was a decision the US should acknowledge as being one of the worst decisions of the Truman era.

While I can't give you an exact date of US involvement because that will go clear back into the 40s as assistance to the French.
Operation Farmgate (detachment 2A) went to Vietnam on a 6 month TDY deployment (which was extended) in early November of 1961. Operation Farmgate officially ended at the end of June 1963. The irony is that most of us that were there in those early days thought that Vietnam was going to be a minor deal, and that the actual war (if it came to war) would be in Laos.
