I have full 3rd party cover in the UK. Do I still need to buy the insurance offered by the rental company (in CA)?

Not too likely. And it wouldn't cover damages to the car in any case. Your English auto insurance company will not have licence to insure in Canada or the US.
Travel Underwriters has an office in London. Ask if they can sell rental car collision damage coverage for the US.

I doubt if it would cover you out of country, but you might call and ask to make sure. A quick call would be cheaper than the possibility of an uncovered incident.

take proof, even then they may say no, i am in canada, for $20 i can get a form from my insurance company that us rental companies accept............ask the us rental company what they require...........then just do it

and you can bet in california your going to need it.Most likely will be required to get it from car rental.
