There isn't a quick and easy way to learn french. As you are at uni, you might be able to find a beginners french class to take as a free module or for a small fee on campus. My uni definately does classes in loads of languages that are available to all students. My uni also has special online tutorials and other materials for those who can't, or don't want to, go to regular classes, so maybe your's does the same.

The BBC website has a good interactive french course for beginners. Also, when i was learning Spanish I found the Michel Thomas tapes to be fantastic. They build your vocabulary, accent and knowledge of grammar incredibly quickly, without you even realising it.

I'm doing a french degree and find that the easiest way to increase your vocab quickly is to make flash cards with ten french words on one side and the ten english translations of those words on the other. Little and often is the trick! So if you learn ten words 6 days a week until the 1st of june you'll know over 1600 words, more than emnough to get by in any situation.

Obviously you'll need to know grammar too. A book that explains the rules while giving you exercises to practice with are useful - you can get them in any bookshop.

Finding a french person though is always the best way to learn!

Anyway, this is quite a rambling answer, but those are my ideas!

Bon chance.

There is a book 'Comme disent les Francais" How the French Speak, which is simply a list of some 7000+ common English phrases translated into the correct colloquial French.

If you think about it this is how we learn to speak as children.

If you have a very basic grammar and can get someone to help with the accent this could be a way forward for you.

There's no quick and easy way to learn a language. For the basics, try a local college or your Uni. Most offer short courses (10 or 12 weeks) where you can get the basics. You can often learn in an evening or on Saturday mornings. Bon chance!

If you've got an mp3 player download an audio course onto it and you can listen to the lessons during your spare time or on your way to and from lectures. You can do the same with language cassettes and a walkman.Once you've picked up some of the basics get some learning French books out of the library and test yourself to gauge how you are getting on.
