The medical term is called borboygmus, (it is pronounced bor·bo·ryg·mus) and it is defined as the intestinal rumbling caused by moving gas. Your stomach starts to growl when your stomach walls squeeze together in an attempt to mix and digest food and there's no food there. Gases and digestive juices slosh around in your empty stomach and before you know it - borborygmi.

Not all things digest at the same time. Lets say you eat a burger with lettuce on it & are full so dont feel hungry. As time passes the bread has been digested, then the beef, but the lettuce which is very fiberous can take over 24 hours to process. You are hungry cuz it is the only thing left in your stomach. The sounds you hear is the harder to digest food being processed & not really a sound of hunger, as one really has nothing to do with the other aside from timing.

That's actually a question I learned the answer to in gross anatomy class. It's a mixture of stomach acids trying to eat food not there, and air moving around. The nasty part though, is if your stomach is empty, you need to eat, because your stomach starts digesting the lining as a result of looking for nutrition. When people starve theirselves often, they start to have stomach problems as a result, like acid reflux.

i think the noise is due to your intestines moving food down the system, causing the upper part to be emptied, thus you get hungry.
