There is no easy answer to that question. There are a lot of fantastic brands out there, but what works for one baby may not work for another. Alot of it will depend on size and age of your baby. I will go through the different stages of babyhood with my recommendations of diapers and covers, and I will include links for most of the products that I recommend in the source section.

If you have a newborn baby, I would recommend prefolds or fitted diapers, covered with a wool soaker, pul (a waterproof laminate) wrap or a nylon pull on cover (with snaps).

The best prefolds around are DSQ (Diaper Service Quality), there are chinese or indian cotton DSQ prefolds available. They both work wonderfully, the only difference between the two is that chinese ones are slightly larger, and indian ones are softer. I have heard that chinese prefolds are more durable, but indian prefolds should last you through at least two children. Which ever ones you choose, you will probably find the best price for them on EBay.

The best fitted diapers for newborns are Kissaluvs or Swaddlebees.

For wool covers, you can't go wrong with Disana. For pul covers, your best choice is Bummis Super Whisper Wrap. For nylon covers, buy Cloth-eez brand.

Once baby is out of the newborn size, and you aren't changing diapers quite so often I would still recommend prefolds or fitteds. If you are going the prefold route, you will need to trade your infant prefolds in for premium size- 'regular' size is the same as premium, only they are not as thick and I wouldn't recommend them.

If you are using fitted diapers, I would recommend buying wahm brand over mass produced fitteds. I wouldn't buy larger size kissaluvs, as their bigger sizes are not as good as their size 0's. Tykie Diapers are good and you can buy 12 for the price of 11. Other good wahms are LoveyBums, EsBaby, Little Bean Diapers, and Zoom Baby Gear. Another great place to get fitteds is from an online diaper resale site. This way you can sample different brands affordably. I think that Cloth Diaper Exchange has the best variety.

For covers, I would stick with the ones I listed above (Disana, Bummis, or Cloth-Eez).

When your baby is older and eating solids and having formed bowel movements, that is a good time to try pocket diapers or All In Ones (AIOs). Natural Babies sells a good variety of pocket diapers. For AIOs, you could try buying some used ones to find out your preference, but I prefer Bumkins as they are thin and dry quickly- which is unusual for an AIO. They are also one of the only AIOs that I've never had leaks with. The other one that has never leaked for me is a HoneyBoy AIO. They are much thicker, so they are perfect for nighttime and long car trips.

I hope that you find this helpful and not confusing. Good luck!
