you can add some Kielbasa...or diced ham and red potatoes to make a meal...

INGREDIENTS
3/4 cup water
1 small head red cabbage, finely shredded
3 apples - peeled, cored and chopped
1/4 cup packed brown sugar
1 cup distilled white vinegar
1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
1/4 teaspoon ground cloves
2 tablespoons butter, divided
DIRECTIONS
Place water in a large saucepan, and stir in cabbage, apples, brown sugar, vinegar, cinnamon, allspice, cloves, and 1 tablespoon butter. Bring to a boil. Reduce heat, and cover. Simmer 45 minutes, stirring occasionally, until cabbage is tender. Stir in remaining butter before serving.

Red Cabbage Recipe
Red Cabbage with Apple, Apple Jelly, and Red Wine
2 pounds red cabbage
1 apple
2 tablespooons butter
1 bay leaf
salt and pepper to taste
2 to 4 juniper berries, optional
1 tablespoon flour
1/2 cup red wine
1 to 3 teaspoons apple jelly
dash ground cloves


Wash and shred cabbage. Slice apple. Melt butter in a large pan; add cabbage and apple and mix well. Season with salt, pepper, bay leaf, and juniper berries, if using. Cook in 1 cup of water over low heat until done, about 10 minutes. Add a little more water if needed. When liquid has evaporated, sprinkle with flour. Add red wine and apple jelly and cloves to taste. Serves 4.

Put about 2 inches of water in a large pot and boil an approx. 12" diameter ham steak for about 10 minutes (cut the steak into cubes). Cut up the cabbage and put it in the pot but do not cover. Stir the cabbage and cook only until it changes color (becomes somewhat translucent). Add salt and plenty of black pepper. Drain into a serving dish and enjoy.
