They could, but they won't.

100% in favor. It won't be so easy for the yellow belly, America haters to run off to Canada this time. Why? Because Canada is working on a plan to Require anybody, American, Canadian or whatever to have a passport to cross the border, in either direction.
so, running away won't be an option this time.
Aside from the military aspect, the Rangle bill would also offer options for other types of required civil service, not just bullet sponges.
Just remember, it is a Democrat that wants the draft, and the Majority of the American people voted for the Democrats this time. So that means this is what the American people want.
It was a republican President that ended the draft after VietNam and instituted an all volunteer military, one that is more educated and about 99% drug free. The Republicans made the Military what it is today. A republican President built the military up to a considerable force during the eighties, and a Democrat cut the size of the military in half during the Nineties, which made us appear weak in the eyes of the international community. Now a Democrat wants to destroy the military even further by drafting unwilling participants. The American people will have noone to blame but themselves, they just had to elect Dems.
Yes, I would let my daughter serve if drafted. I would like to see her go right now and volunteer, but she is in college and still sees things through a liberals eyes. Some day, she will mature and see that the country needs a strong military, and intelligent people to keep it strong. I would not encourage her boyfriend to serve, he is just plain ol stupid, and probably couldn't open the door at the recruiters office. He is the kind that would be drafted.

First yes they can bring the draft back. The second amendment states that all able bodied males 18 years of age or older are in the militia. Bringing back the draft is calling up the militia to active duty.
Will they draft women too. No the can't the second amendment specifically states males not females. Women can not be legally drafted because of that.
That was one of the bones of contentions which caused the EQUAL RIGHTS FOR WOMEN amendment not to pass. Most women voted against it for that reason. If the EQUAL RIGHTS FOR WOMEN amendment had passed women would also have to register for the draft and could also be drafted.
Will they not likely because the war has gotten so unpopular it will be political suicide to do so.

Well, it would be a sad day but these overlords we have in Washington can do anything they want. Actually, I wish they would bring back the draft because there would be such a middle class revolt in this country the likes of which haven't been seen. When they start coming for our sons and daughters to ship off to the next war- of- choice there will be blood in the streets.
I wish someone could explain to me how it is different in principle taking people from the African coast AGAINST THEIR WILL and making them work on plantations and forcing adults AGAINST THEIR WILL to go risk their lives in Iraq. You can dress it up any way you like and wrap it in the flag but it is the same: INVOLUTARY SERVITUDE! At least the African slaves didn't get shot at or had to take others lives as part of their slavery!

I believe if we don't hurry up and get a decisive plan for exiting Iraq, a draft is likely within the next two years. I'm not saying, GET OUT NOW, but without a plan for withdrawal this war will linger for years with NO HEADWAY. We don't have to get out within the next two years, we just need to be able to know how we are getting out, and what to do to make it happen. As far as draft dodging goes, NO WAY. This is the greatest country in the world - FIGHT FOR IT IF WE HAVE TO. Hopefully not though.

Only Liberals from New York want a draft.
How would I avoid it? I'd vote Republican or Libertarian.
Lastly, the draft issue is just another example of Liberal Anti-War hysteria.
The real question you should ask is "What will you do if your nation is threatened? To what extremes are you prepared to go if real threats appear?"

What people keep ignoring is that the military doesn't want a draft. Draftees tend to be unmotivated and unreliable, posing a danger to those who rely on them because they see no reason to put themselves at risk. I started my career in '72, during the tail end of Nam, and I worked with people like that, they had joined the Navy to avoid the Army. They were, quite honestly, not worth the effort to keep them working, they did the bare minimum it took to get by, and were sullen, resentful, and angry about having to do that.

Congressman Rangle made the proposal more to prove a point than to actually push a bill through. It was obvious such a bill would fail, and indeed Polosi and Hoyer announced that there would be no such bill offered.
Rangles very good points are A) our military cannot reamin combat response capable should there be a need while we are stretched this thinly in Iraq and other places, and B) most of the enlisted people (including many of those dying in Iraq) are from lower income groups.

I don't think it will be reinstated, but if it dose the women should also be drafted they want all these equal rights then they should have them, just like Israel, all women serve at least 2 years. But if I no the women here, they will spread their legs so fast to get pregnant it will make the Marines blush. Women now days have no morals, and talk about baby boom, their will be no abortions in those years if the draft happens and they draft women. But if they do put the draft back in it will be the Dem's that do it, not Rep's, remember their in charge now.

Not gonna happen. The all-volunteer military is a far better, more motivated, more capable, better fighting force than any draft force could give us.
No point in having a draft. It gains the US and our security nothing - in fact it would harm it.

It will never happen. That NY congressman ( never can remember his name) says that if the drft was brought back it would bring the war to an immediate end, but I think it's the stupidest idea I ever heard. Bush doesn't care about what we think of the war, he's gonna stay no matter what. He is very niave.
