What I've noticed is that a lot of banks will set up an account for people to donate to where people can go into any branch of that bank and indicate that they would like to donate some money to the family. Unfortunately, I don't know what advice to give for looking outside the immediate area for donations.

I know that in my city the Salvation Army has an emergency disaster service - they may do this elsewhere. Often newspapers and local TV news will put on a human interest story and people can donate to the family (tell a bank that they are going to do this before so that a secure account can be set up). If they belong to a faith community, perhaps the faith leader can organize a collection or speak to a state/provincial office of their denomination on their behalf. I wish the people all the best of luck!

Call The Radio Stations and go to your Church. No matter how rural the area is, there is a church around the corner. I would also call the Red Cross 800 number.

The Salvation Army.
(I live in a rural area and when people around here lose their homes in a fire, the local churches always...ALWAYS...have some kind of drive to collect household furnishings, clothing and money for them).

Yea dont go to the red cross for any kind of donation. But you know i wouldnt really know that answer. I think the best thing you could do is try to get friends, family, etc to donate things and try to help out. that way you know exactly where your money is going and what is being used for.

i live in a rural area and 7yrs ago my apt. building burned down and red cross helped us out. you might have to travel to the next town to get to a store that supports the red cross vouchers, also try your Churches in the community?
