probably the LCDs are a bit better... basically they're using gas and it works quite well. plasma tvs-they use plasma so it might look a bit blurry sometimes.... the best choice if you ask me is the good old CRT tvs

I assume you mean "better looking picture."
At the 42" size I agree with previous responders, it's mostly a wash- EXCEPT (1) That in comparable sized sets, plasma tv's are less expensive than LCD's and (2) that you must consider WHERE (what room in your house) you will be using the tv. You may be fooled and possibly disappointed, if you select a set based on how it looks in a brightly lit showroom and you plan to use it in a dimly lit home theater setting. It is the nature of the differences in technology between the two tv's, that plasma sets have their best contrast in dimmer lighting, while LCD's look better in brighter light (which is what most showrooms are).
Other factors to consider are that LCD's use about 1/3 less power than plasma sets; plasma sets don't suffer from "trailer" or "smearing" effect when viewing fast moving video playback, like LCD's can, because plasma sets have faster response times than LCD's. LCD's have better resolution than plasmas of the same size, so make sure your plasma set is at least 1024 X 768 for high def resolution.

The people who said LCD were right on target. Static images (images that stay on the screen for extended periods of time) can burn in on a plasma. One other considering you might want to think about: Samsung offers a game mode, which actually helps with the gamma from game boxes, and also cuts down on the processing speed. The benefit of this is that the picture processing that is normally done (and causes delay) will be gone, and you'll be playing "realtime" instead of waiting for the picture to be processed. (sometimes these delays take as long as a half second) In some games, this slight difference will keep Tony Hawk on his skateboard, and your soldier alive in Halo3. Sony is not terrible; but for the game play, definitely go with a Samsung. Good luck to you!

For most average viewers, they won't see any difference.
However, plasma has slightly better (almost imperceptible) contrast ratio than LCD.
The most important thing is determining which one offers better viewing pleasure to your eyes.
