Hyundai has vastly improved since they earned their bad reputation in the early '90s. The last few years Hyundai has been near the top in JD Power new car quality surveys, even beating Honda and Toyota. The 2003 Accent won second-best subcompact in the long-term quality survey. However, most companies didn't sell subcompacts in the US in 2003, so where's the competition? Overall, Hyundai is still below average in long-term reliability (from '03 model data), but consider that industry-wide, 1998 cars had 56% more problems than 2003 cars of the same age, so cars are getting better overall. Saying Hyundai had .02 fewer problems per year than Toyota is basically saying they are both excellent now. Also beware that the the ten-year 100,000mi warranty is valid for the First Owner Only unless special arrangements were/are made. Used cars come with the 5yr/60k warranty only, so aim for an '03 or '04 to get decent warranty.

I'd have to say YES. My wife owned an early 90s model Excel, which was an absolute piece of dog poop.
But being in the market for a new car in 2001, we looked at Hyundai again. We bought an 02 Elantra GLS and have had NO problems that weren't covered under the warranty. It now has 80,000 miles on it and runs like new. I recommend them over ANY GM car.
We previously owned a Geo Prizm piece of sh*t, with a crappy 3 year/36000 mile warranty. Guess what happened at 38000 miles?? The alternator became unbolted from the car, costing 500 hard earned dollars out of MY POCKET.

My Hyundai has a 10 year/100,000 mile warranty. I do most of the maintenance myself, and I enjoy racking up the miles in my fully loaded car that I got for less than other makes offer for a stripped down model.

Go for a newer model though - 2000 is kinda old. You could probably get a relatively new model for cheap if you can get financing.
Good luck!!!

Hyundai's that are older than the 2001 are not very good... I own a 200 Hyundai Elantra.... it was bought new.... but cheap because of tornado damage. I already had to get a new transmission. It was under warranty but when you are the second owner of the car then the warranty goes down.... it is a catch in the warranty department of Hyundai.... I found that out the hard way when my transmission went out, good thing was that it was still under the original owners name which was my parents. Mine has been nothing but trouble best bet would be Honda. or any Hyundai newer than a 2000-01.

So far No! I just bought a 2007 Accent and I have had nothing but problems including a radio that changes stations when I brake! And the service center rips off women! Car won't stop on a wet road. Cheap but not safe. GM is the way to go!

I have owned my Hyundai for 4 years now, and I bought mine second hand. It is 1998 model, and although a very basic car, she is very reliable and a comfortable drive. I can recommend them. Unfortunately I have no idea how much the 2000 model costs now. they are one of the cheaper cars, but just as good. I live in Cape Town and paid R38000.00 for mine four years ago. Hope this helps you.

Try looking for 2003 and newer if you want to go Hyundai, if you want to go with that. For the same money as a 2000 Hyundai though, I would try to find a '98 model Honda or Toyota.

Hyundais are GREAT cars! Even if you buy a 2000 year model, it will still have a factory warranty depending on the miles it has on it. Just make sure you do your research, and check at carfax.com to see if it's been wrecked or anything. The cost is WELL worth it. Good luck!

In my opinion....No!

I have been involved with cars for many years and while the imports are more reliable I would stick to Toyota, Honda, Nissan in that order. The high end cars are even better but for an economical price I'd stick to the three as mentioned.

All used cars are different if it was well maintained and there are service records to back it up that's a good thing. It also depends on the price, check kbb.com or autotrader.com to compare prices. They are a good car, better than they were 15 years ago.

My ex girlfriends sister drives one and she has no complaints. I don't even think she had to get anything repaired yet. I hear the warranty on Hyundais are really good. But they aren't really known for reliability.

I just found someone who is having a major problem with their 2000 Accent......heres the link:
