Today, most sewing machines have standardized parts made in the countries that have cheap labour so the name on the machine matters little. Buy the machine that is easy to use for you with the features you need, and a good warranty offered by the manufacturer. Make sure you can drop the machine to the store and they will send it the manufacturer for repairs, or they will repair in their shop (Sears does it for example). Good luck.

Viking is an excellent brand of sewing machine. Mine is maintenance-free and I would recommend this brand to anyone interested in buying a machine.

I own one and I bought it new about 10 years ago and had two used Singer machines before this one. The Singer machines were good too and I used them each for about 10 years. The second Singer machine I had finally did break down to a non-repairable state and that is when I traded it in for the Viking.
