Two things here:

Do your research. Schizophrenia has a strong genetic component to it and is an extremely serious illness. Also, when mentall illness is passed on down the line, it tends to be more severe. (There is a scientific reason for this, but I will spare you the details for now.)

The medications she is taking are most likely not safe to be on while pregnant. Going off of them may cause a relapse and it would be best if you were both aware of that and prepared for it to happen, with a plan of action in place beforehand.

These are things that should be given a tremendous amount of thought before going ahead with getting pregnant.

I have bipolar disorder and a number of other conditions. I have passed this down to my child and will live with the guilt of that for the rest of my life. I was very young when I had him and very determined to have a child. At the time I was not able to understand the reality of what I was doing, all I cared about was that all I wanted in life was to be a mother. If I knew then, what I know now, despite the fact that I love my son more than anything in the world, I would have at the very least waited until my condition was stabilized before having kids. I always wanted more than one, but at this point I do not think I will ever have another biological child. I don't think it's fair to do so. I highly underestimated A) the chances he would inherit this from me and B) how difficult parenting a high needs child would be for someone that already has a very difficult time managing in every day life.

I'm not saying that nobody with a mental ilness should have kids, just that there is a lot of educating yourself to do before making such a dramatic life decision.
