Lots more on Google: the following is part: I must say I always believed it was an aid to sleep, but 'a narcotic similar to opium'...
The wild origin of our modern lettuce, Lactuca serriola , can still be seen all over Europe and the more temperate parts of Asia. It is likely that it originated on the Mediterranean rim on rocky wasteland or woodland clearings. This ancient wild relative of the modern lettuce contains a narcotic similar to opium. The Romans took advantage of this property eating lettuce at the end of a meal to induce sleep.
In earlier times the Egyptians held a similar view of the lettuce. However as well as a hypnotic or an aid to sleep, the plant was also linked with male virility.

Absolutely not. Lettuce does not have a lot of nutrients, and diet coke will only make you gain weight. The name diet is deceiving because it sounds like it is healthy. It is actually almost worse for you than regular coke, because it contains aspartame. Aspartame creates artificial cravings for some of the most fattening foods in your mind. So, realistically, even the greatest will power in the world could not stick to that diet. I won't risk your health by telling you how to lose weight, because I don't know your current weight condition. It sounds like you may have a case of something close to anorexia. You need to stop worrying about your weight. After all, you don't need a perfect Body to have a great life. A perfect body doesn't even exist! Even supermodels hate their thighs, so let it go. Have fun being healthy and happy!

I've never read where lettuce makes you sleepy? But that doesn't mean that there isn't something in it that causes some kind of chemical reaction in your body to make you so.
Certainly celery has a calming effect and it is suggested that people drink celery juice (along with some type of fruit juice) in the evening to help them sleep.
