All piercings hurt, but to what extent depends on the piercer and your tolerance to pain. Often, rook, conch and tragus piercings are more painful than the helix piercings. The cartilage tends to be thicker and a bit harder.

Not at all. It stings a little but that can only be said from having a needle pushed through thick cartlidge ;) Definitely have the barbell rather than a ring; it's easier to heal plus it's more discreet so people won't freak out about a bar of metal shoved through a part of your ear.
Really though, the healing is being the only pain in the **** for this piercing for me. Got it done at the end of August and it's still a little scabby. Just be patient with it.

Mine didn't hurt much at all, but it hurt the next day when I was on a flight from Australia to the US and I accidentally slept on it on the plane - and we hit some turbulence! It took over 6 months to heal, which is far longer than any of my other piercings. All in all, I'd say it was about average for piercing pain, and higher than others for healing pain/annoyance.
And contrary to what others have said, I got a ring and it has been fine. It's a little tiny ring, and I can actually flip it behind the front fold of my ear (helix) to hide it if I need to. Ask for your piercer's opinion on this, though... after all, they're the professionals.

My rook had to be one of my easiest piercings. Although now it is very swollen and I'm having an awful time with it.
It is a thicker piece of cartilage so there is more to go through. It is also sort of an odd location and cleaning can be difficult at first.
If you do get it done, go with a barbell instead of a ring. Trust me on that one.

yes all piercings hurt. but you may not have the anatomy to get one done. thicker cartilage hurts. i have 3 normal cartilae piercings. i got 2 over a month ago and they just stopped hurting liek a week ago. it was very hard to sleep! lolol if you get it done just take care of it! and remember the pain is only tempoaray! =D just get it done if you can and wait out the pain =)
