I've felt it before. This is a sign that you are a free thinker.
"Only by letting go, can you truly grasp what is real."
It helps to know that nothing in this life is an absolute fact. The truth is relative, and NOTHING can be proven 100%. Given that, you seek information, and make assumptions. But keep searching.
One of Michelangelos paintings, I can't remember what it was called. A man extends his hand out to almost touch God, but he can't. He may get very close, but he never will touch it.
That's our purpose. We've got 5 senses to guide us through this infinate universe. In all reality, we are very blind. This is a blessing and not a curse. There would be no point in living if there weren't any questions.

when i am feeling bad i always refer to Romans 8:28. read for context go a little before and a little after but the aspect is that for a true bible believing christian, all things work together for good. you may be fighting for a lost cause. the Bible says to kick the dust off your feet as a testimony against the unperceptive (MAT 10:14, MAR 6:11, LUKE 9:5). I talked to a friend at work that seemed interested in God but would never take the next step. after a year of not being employed there he calls me out of the blue and wanted to get into a Bible study with me. i was floored. you don't have to grow the plant you just have to cast a seed. move on a God speed

You're right it can be tough to see the reality that we are here all alone. Humans are only here through many different accidents. If the dinosaurs hadn't gone extinct, we would probably never have appeared, if the first humans had gotten sick, we would never have made it.
We are the same as wildebeest and rabbits. There are just huge amounts of us recyling the free energy at the surface of the earth. Someday we will all be gone and every human creation, discovery, and thought will simply be ... gone. That's it.
I look at primates and how they sleep, eat, and procreate and don't give a darn about their place in the world, they simply are. That's what humans need to realize, this is it, enjoy it. After you are dead, all of your memories, learning, everything will simply cease to exist. So don't wait for it, live now.

Yes. The problem is you were religious. I was that way too, and I went through the same thing. But God is real, and He's more than just a religion. He is a real person who desires a real relationship with you. If you put your faith in a religion, you will not be filled, but God Himself can fill you and wants to do so. Don't give up. Seek Him through prayer and His word (the Bible). Pray and ask Him to reveal Himself to you and lead you in the way that you should go. Also pray and ask Him to open your heart and your understanding as you study His word. Finally, pray that He will put people in your life who will help you and lead you to Him (not just to a church, but to Him. There is a diffference) Jesus said, "whoever seeks me finds me." Don't just seek a church. Seek Him first and directly. Then He will lead you to a church or to wherever He decides. The Bible also says "Seek first the kingdom of God and then all of these things will be added unto you."
Many blessings.

I have felt that a little - though, from the starting point of atheism, it is more of a WANTING something to believe in.
But I don't think you need religion to be happy. Not at all. Perhaps study some Dawkins (not the religious stuff, the science stuff. Science is beautiful too and he is a good writer.)
Immerse yourself in the arts. Read a lot. Create things.
Live in the moment whenever you can and take pleasure in the little things.
Don't worry, sister.

This too shall pass. At some point, you'll either rejoin the sheep, or if you continue to explore your feelings, you will arrive on the other side, where you are free from religion and the shackles of a man-made god.
For now you'll just have to endure the feelings. We all suffer now and then.

I found that it really helps when you feel down, to help someone less fortunate than yourself, that way it will let you focus on something else instead of your own problems. Just remember God is still here loving you, Ill be praying for you.

You are not alone. Look around you. It's a crowded world - people, animals, plants, planets, stars and galaxies. Just be happy that you are a part of it all. You don't necessarily need a sky-daddy to look out for you.
It's gonna be ok.

Now that you see the world for what it is, it is time you go to school and learn what stars and trees really are.
