Hi , it really depends on the year & model of your Volvo, if it is a recent model it is most likely that the management system on the car is overriding the ignition system for a programed fault , such as ABS failure.

If it is an older model then it may be as simple as the HT lead from the coil being corroded and the ignition cutting out as a result.

The brake system takes a vacuum feed from the engine to assist with the braking system via the servo that would be why the brake pedal is hard.

As you don't appear to be mechanically inclined ( no insult intended ) i would suggest that if you are a member of the AA or RAC with Home Start then a call out when you have the time will allow a qualified mechanic to check it and direct you accordingly.

Good Luck.

I have an 83 volvo and mine used to not start sometimes then i replaced the computer. It was a used computer from another volvo but it did the trick. You can get one at a junk yard or "pick and pull" if you have one in your area. It could be multiple reasons why this is happening though.

Turn key off. Make sure it's in park. Then try again to start it.
