I bought my Acer Aspire brand new. How do I know whose fault it is? Microsoft or Acer? I paid hundreds of dollars for this laptop. It should have come with an authentic license for Windows.

The Seal on the back says Windows XP Home Edition - Acer Incorporated
Then it has the Product Key
The Microsoft logo along with the microsoft website (which I went to) and a holograph that says 'genuine'.

I hope that works because I don't have my receipt and I never mailed in my warranty.

You will have to contact Acer customer suport.... I hope you registered the computer with Acer when you bought it! Acer might of issued a Bulk License to your computer, you will need a new Key code....

I would contact Acer. Most likely someone along the line between where the computer was built and you, has copied down and used the product key for your copy of windows. MS already registered that Key and so now when you tried to register it, they think it's not valid. Acer should be responsible for providing you with a new one.

Acer because their the ones who sold it to you. All you can do is go back tothe store/person you bought it from. For future reference buy your computers from a trusted source like a Best Buy or Staples Store.
