It take a lot of sacrifice.
Blessed are the poor in spirit. I think those who have nothing in this life are more blessed because they are more willing to fully submit to God. They are blessed for that. The more we 'trust and obey' the more blessings we will receive.

How does one 'work toward' obtaining blessings from god? I thought those were free.
Ohhh... you mean: "Do you know what it takes to get the things you want in life? Are you working towards them yourself, or expecting they'll just fall out of the sky?"
Yes, I work for the things I want. That's how it works. If I do nothing, I get nothing. No god required!

My greatest blessing is knowing Him!
I honestly dont think I deserve His blessings, yet I know He wants to give them. I just pray He will continue to take care of me and my family and provide our needs. Which he continually does! Praise Be to Him!

I know it takes accepting the Lord Jesus Christ as my Savior. Then I can talk freely to God and he will guide me.

if you pray for a hole, buy a shovel and get to work. God will give you the ability to dig it, but you also have to do your part.
