My dog vomited twice last night....a redish brown colored vomit with a syrupy texture. His belly looked like it was protruding more than usual. He also has increased thirst and uriniation. His nose is cool and wet and his gums are nice and pink and he has no diarhea. His behavior has not changed , he is still playful and hyper as usual and does not act sick. This morning, his belly is no longer protruding and he has not vomited since last night. He is eating fine but still is very thirsty. Well...I am worried that maybe he was throwing up blood, how do you know if your dog is vomiting blood??? I am thinking maybe he ate something bad but he seems hyper as usual, when he is sick he just sleeps and looks sick but he does not look sick. Should I take him to the vet?

Yes, the dog definetly needs to go to the vet. The reddish brown stuff is most likely blood....while there may not be much blood now, a situation like this tends to get very bad very fast. Meaning, you might have to rush your dog to an emergency vet clinic in the middle of the night to prevent him from dying if you don't take him to the vet now....I know from experience. They will probably run a panel of blood tests and give him medicine to stop his nausea/vomiting. They will also give you a gentler type of dog food (like Hill's Science I/D) so it will be gentle enough to not bother your dog's stomach....they will also give some other treatment depending on diagnosis. Your dog will begin to feel better immediately and he will love you forever for taking such good care of him.

If you go now, the cost will be affordable, but if you wait, your dog most likely will get worse and need to be hospitalized and given emergency care, which runs several hundred dollars. The fact that he is still acting normal is a good sign that the condition isn't bad yet. Again, please take him to the vet as soon as you can because if he is hemorrhaging internally it will only get worse.

The problem with dogs is, they can't talk. Or maybe that's a blessing. But living with dogs has shown me that they give a lot of signals, many of which are dog-lovers delights.

I believe the symptoms you described warrant close watch. Check his stomach again and see if it feels tight, like a drum skin. Symptoms are what the vet will appreciate when/if you take the dog in for a check-up. Write down everything you notice that is not normal. Sometimes we forget after waiting at the Vets office.

The excessive thirst is not a good sign. It could be the dog ate something that cut his gut...internal bleeding makes a dog thirsty. Also, diabetes makes a dog thirsty. But the symptoms you describe sound like possible internal injury. It's possible his gut could heal itself, but if he did swallow something an x-ray would show that, and whether or not an operation is necessary to remove it before further damage is done internally.

The Vet is your best source of help. All the suggestions in the world aren't going to save your dog. And you're obviously worried, or you would not have put the question out here for answers.

If it was my dog, I'd take him to see the Vet.

I am glad your dog is feeling better and it would seem normal that he is more thirsty after having thrown up a few times last night. Anything that concerns you warrants a call to your Vet for peace of mind in knowing you contacted a professional.
From time to time, my dogs throw up and it is usually a frothy sort of yellowish slimy content. I don't worry about it if it happens a few times and then they are okay. You seem concerned about what your dog threw up, so you might want to check with your Vet.

Do it. Take him. It might be nothing or just a small flu/ food poisoning but it would be good to make sure he's alright. All the dog vomit I've seen (3 dogs) has been yellow, not redish-brown. Take him just to make sure.

If he is acting his normal self and the vomitting has stopped then I would monitor him to see if there are any more symptoms. If everything is back to normal in a day or two then you probably don't need to take him to the vet. My puppy has thrown up before and got over it in about a day or two... Just keep an eye on him and go with your instinct. If it continues to happen, then take him in... Good luck.

Take him to the vet. It may be nothing, but it may be something. Excessive thirst could also mean something. Possible vomiting of blood and excessive thirst could be early signs of something. If it is serious, you have caught it early. It could be nothing, but I would take him to the vet just to be on the safe side.

I think if your dog seems fine, then don't take him to the vet. My dog always eats dumb stuff and has these same symptoms for a few days, or a few hours. One time my dog ate an entire burrito and it was a mess. I think your dog is fine, but if you are really worried, then it's your call.

you should take him to the vet just in case.. but it sounds like he just threw up something that he souhld not have eaten... last night my dog at my lil brothers crayons and threw up a rainbow... but for safe mesures i took her to her vet so if there's anymore it dosen't cause any damage and won't make her more sick in the long run... and dogs can act really normal and not seem sick at all that's when you really need to take them in cause it could be somting that last for the rest of it's life

If it concerns you still, and you have the resources to do so, then yes, take him to the vet. If however, resources are limited, keep an eye on him closely, and at the first sign of this happening again, or of something else wrong, take him immediately!
