i have to ride in the backseat with my parents for eight hours. the worst part is that they refuse to let me drive because i "don't know the area". so ill be stuck in the back. what can i do to pass the time on the worst drive ever?

Depending on your attitude, this can be worst ever, or quality time. What better time to get to really know your parents than with them for that amount of time? Open ended questions to the one not driving at the moment...Dad, what trips did you take with grandma and grandpa when you were a kid? Mom, when you met dad did you know he was the one?
Or take everyones advice and hide in your music or on your cell phone, and let the opportunity go by.

sleep (I get the best sleep while in a car)
color (seriously color in a coloring book, when is the last time you did that)
snack on yummy chips and candy and what not

What an opportunity to TALK to your folks. Tell jokes, sing songs, point out interesting sights as you pass them. You could learn a lot and MAYBE, just maybe they could learn something from you.

take a nap, bring some good cds, do you have a portable dvd player?, bring ear plugs! lol, bring a cell phone, bring hand held games, bring great books/novels,

play punch buggie with them, and tell them you will stop when you can drive because you will be paying to much attention to everything else to play the game
