Any shot that severs the spine will drop a deer dead before it hits the ground. However, those are risky shots and may end up wounding the animal. The same goes for head shots...they end up wounding more deer than killing them. The most effective shot is just behind the shoulder about 1/3 of the way up the body. That will take out the lungs. If the deer is quartering away from you, aim at the far shoulder. If the deer is headed directly toward you, aim for the middle of the chest under the neck. If the deer is facing away from you, wait until it turns to get a better shot. Keep in mind that with all of these shots the deer will run off a little distance, usually less than 100 yards. If you need to drop the deer right there in it's tracks, shoot for the middle of the shoulder. That will bread the shoulder bone and drop the deer. You will most likely need to follow up and shoot it again in the neck when you get to it. Check out the link below to see a visual of what I just described. Good luck.

A shot square in the shoulder will drop a deer right now. It will spoil some meat but nothing special. I tend to lean toward a lung shot just behind the shoulder if it is available. They will go 40-50 yards more or less, depending on the weapon.
A neck or head shot will anchor them right now but you should be very close for that type of placement.

well it seems that everybody is right. behind the shoulders is the best most common shot. but just make sure you are using a high powered rifle or shotgun for an immediate drop. but if you are using a smaller grain bullet such as a 243 223 or somthing in that nature the game will run a great distance before finally dieing. so shoot them in the head unless a big buck. but if it doesnt drop make sure you wait about 20 min before getting up so that the deer will not keep running. it will just lay down and die.

Everyone is different on that. I do upper neck just below the head less than 100 yards, heart lung ( just behind front shoulder) over 100 yards.
But if its a monster and I want to be sure I take it down I will shoot it in the front shoulder, then I know no matter what it is not going anywhere, but you do lose a little meat that way.

sure, yet i would not attempt it different than in an emergency and that i substitute into hungry and that's the final I had. Then i could purpose on the backside of the deer's ear while the deer's head substitute into looking sideways and make the shot no extra suitable than 50 yards. some years in the past in Virginia a boy squirrel looking with a .22 killed a undergo that fluctuate into over 500 pounds with one shot. If it could have been a criminal kill it could have been the Virginia state checklist. rather, he have been given busted for killing the undergo with an unlawful weapon and his dad have been given busted for sticking an arrow into the undergo to make the kill look criminal. They have been given caught while the sport biologist who substitute into sent to be sure the hot state checklist got here upon the .22 bullet interior the undergo's heart.

Right behind the front shoulder, that should take the hart out. Or you could aim for the center of the rib cage, this will take the lunges out and he will be sure to die but may run a little.

The best place is a lung shot-mid section just behind the shoulders. The lungs give you the largest area to insure a kill.

depends on your gun if you shoot a .30-30 or a .243, the bullet moves so fast that if you shoot it in the shoulder it might just go all the way through and wont cause any bleeding your best bet is the neck or right behind the front leg
