Considering what you know about abnormal spinal curvatures and about the thoracic cavity, what risks would you expect a physician to outline for the parents of this child?

I am an exploratory teacher, and I like to ask the questions on here before asking my students! So any and every one help me with my studies.

The risks would depend on what was being done about it. With no treatment, severe scoliosis could impact the chest cavity, causing issues with the ribs, lungs and heart. With treatment, again, the risks vary. If surgery is required, there are significant risks associate. If a back brace is able to be used as an alternative, then the risks would be lower.

I have a severe scoliosis curve myself, and the biggest concern is that she is still growing, so therefore the curve continutes to move too. Since the ribs are attached to the spine they get pulled and separated, or squished together. This can cauxe pressure on the heart or lungs, and if left untreated could lead to death.

emotional problems or lowered self-esteem may occur as a result of the condition or its treatment (specifically bracing)
spinal cord or nerve damage from surgery or severe,

uncorrected curve
failure of the bone to fuse (very rare in idiopathic scoliosis)

spine infection after surgery

low back arthritis and pain as an adult

respiratory dysfunction from severe curve

I'd really got a big shock as I saw this incident on the breaking news and I had realized that this was the most horrible accident out caused by a 'wire on the drop tower ride' NOT by a silly act. =( It's way too scary to guess the snapped wire gets her legs severed in a flying moment.
