How are they different from suicide bombers for example?

Josh - Someone said to me that other religions like Islam have martyrs also implying that Christian martrys are no different than other religious martyrs.
But thats not true, christian martyrs are unique.

riverstor - If you study up on this topic you will find that they were indeed unique.

They didn't kill anyone else. Well, the originals anyway.

Martyrdom was originally a very noble thing....there was no fighting involved. The Christians would simply say that they were Christians and that the Romans could do nothing about it, so the Romans tortured and killed them and they still remained Christians.

Everyone claims Christianity is just as violent as other religions, but that is simply not true. Christianity was persecuted and the victim of violence for its first 500 years of existence.

It wasn't until the Romans got sick of killing the Christians, and decided to become Christians themselves that it turned to its violent side.

So blame the Romans, not the Christians.

The uniqueness lies in the fact that all true Christian Martyrs (BTW - today is the Feast of St. Cecilia, Virgin and Martyr) went to their deaths joyfully and without a fight. They took no innocents with them. True Christian Martyrs died for their Faith alone.

They are different from suicide bombers because they don't intentionally blow up people (suicide bombers should be called homicide bombers). Besides, Christian martrys don't hurt anyone or even pick up a weapon.

They are merely persecuted for their faith. There have been some nasty horror stories about Chinese Christians being persecuted for their faith.

The Christian martyrs of the 1st century, at least some of them, were eyewitnesses to the resurrected Jesus. Most of the Apostles were tortured and killed by the Romans for believing in Jesus Christ.Today Christians are routinely tortured and executed for their faith in communist and moslem countries. We Americans have no clue about what our fellow Christians suffer.

Christian martyrs don't take others with them. Unlike suicide bombers.

Christian martyrs do as their Lord. As it is written: "Like a sheep he was led away to be slaughtered, and like a lamb is silent before its shearer, so he does not open his mouth." (Isaiah 53:7)

A martyr is a martyr, they died for something they believed in or something others thought they believed in.

Not one of the people who died in the Salem Witch Hunts could be truly proved to be a witch but as a follower of Wicca I honor their passing to show that religious persecution should never be allowed.

They weren't unique. The only difference between them during that time and the suicide bombers of today is they didn't have explosives back then. They didn't take other people with them when they were martyred (for the most part).

I'm a little stunned by this question.

How does being crucified, thown to lions, and other creative ways the Romans came up with for killing Christians equal suicide bombing attacks?

the believers went to their deaths rather than deny or change their viewpoints on what they believed to be the true Religious Belief System
