You were depressed.
I recommend contacting your local shelter to see if there is a pet loss grief support group. They are wonderful.

I know where you are coming from. My cat died a few weeks ago and I felt sad just being near other animals too, until my new cat found me. You were just mourning and feeling the loss of your pet. Your cat probably reminded you a lot of your dog and you didn't want to get close to her because it made you think about your dog. Like the other answerer said, you may have felt that if you got too close to the cat and she died, too, that it would make you too upset, so you tried to shut yourself off from her. Just remember that your cat was probably depressed from the loss, too, as the dog provided her with some company, and the cat was looking for some affection. I don't think you hated the cat, you probably just hated the idea of being around pets because it was difficult for you. Glad you are feeling somewhat better now, though. You and your cat can take care of each other from now on. I am sorry for your loss, but I know from experience that it gets easier each day.

you were afraid your cat was goning die too so you avoided her to comfort your self. animals have a stange sense that when there master is ill or depressed, the will comfort you and give you as much love as they can. when i was like... 9 i had a bunny had she had gotten so scared from the neighbors dog she was parrelized from waist down. i started crying so bad my mother sent me away because the bunny was trying to hop toward me to well... comfort me.
sorry about that horrible loss with your dog.
good luck and god bless u :)

Grief causes people to do strange things. You cat knew you needed some love - I hope you will treat her so nice.

Subconsciously you probably didn't want to get close to your cat in fear that it would die. When an animal we love dies, we get numb. You didn't want to get emotionally attached to another animal because animals (unfortunately) live shorter lives than we do.
