When I was pregnant, my thyroid medication went up to 100mg (pre pregnancy dosage was .50). My doctor still has me on the 100mg and I find that I am very tired (I had my baby in September). Could this be a side effect of a too high dosage? I tried to find answers on the internet, but to no avail. Any thoughts?

Fatigue can be caused by too much medication or not enough medication, but they are different kinds of fatigue.

With too little medication, you get a kind of fatigue where you are exhausted and can't bear to get out of bed in the morning. You are totally exhausted and you have no energy.

With too much medication, you get a different kind of fatigue, where you feel like you've been running a marathon all day long. It's exhaustion, but it's different.

Other symptoms of too much medication include shortness of breath, fast pulse (especially if greater than 100 beats per minute), weight loss, extreme hunger, irritability, high temperature, feeling hot all the time, tremor (shakiness of hands, for example), and diarrhea.

Seems to me that if you're not nursing (and maybe even if you are), you should have been lowered to your pre-pregnancy dose once you delivered.

At the very least, you should talk to your doctor about your symptoms and he/she should have followed up soon after the birth with blood tests, including T4 and TSH. Blood tests can tell the doctor that you're overdosed. Overdose of thyroid medication puts a lot of strain on the cardiovascular/pulmonary system, so I would definitely not hesitate to speak to my physician about this without delay.

That said, tiredness may just have to do with being directly postpartum. It still wouldn't hurt to have it checked out, though. Don't play around with your metabolism and your life.

I've been on thyroid medicine for 7 years. I'm on 175mg. I used to get tired when the dosage was too low. Call your doctor's office and ask them. They should give you the right answer. You might be tired from having a baby and not your thyroid. Are you getting enough sleep or enough rest? Hope this helped.

I am hypothyroid. A simple TSH test from you doctor will determine if your medication needs adjusted. Usually, fatigue is caused by LOW thyroid though.
