I'm thinking of getting a new VW GTI, but I have had no experience with their customer service, and I haven't always heard the best about it. In general, do they stand by their cars/deal with customers politely/have good mechanic-technicians? Thanks to all who answer!

they have great customer service!

i have taken my 03 Jetta in for warranty work a few times (persistant check engine light, battery, coil packs) and always had good service from the dealerships. when the check engine light kept coming back, VW sent an engineer out to inspect and fix my car...after than, the CEL has not come back.

all of the technicians at the VW dealerships are factory trained, but the ability of the tech is limited to what they are capable of. if you have an idiot with a wrench, no amount of training is going to keep that person from being an idiot. you need to feel out the dealership that you want to take your car to, ask lots of questions and look around. is the shop clean? do the service advisors know what they are talking about? do people look happy?

and dont forget, you can choose whatever dealership you want. you are not stuck with the place you purchased your car from!

ps. good choice in car! those GTIs are HOT

It really depends on the dealer's reputation. I lived in an area with 3 VW dealers and they were all terrible with after the sale service. But in another area I lived in, there was one that was superb, while the other two were crap. Overall, VW does not have the best reputation for customer service, but I go to indepedant shops where they guys are true enthusiasts. Better info and they really give you good info.

Don't go by how the salesperson treats you, either. They are trained to sell and will tell you they are the greatest thing since slice bread. A good way to find out is to go to the dealership service waiting room when there are a few people there getting repairs and ask them. They will gladly speak, especially if negative.

Post you question here about you local dealers and see what kind of responses you get:

VW corporate has been very good about letting me know of the three recalls I had on my vehicle and it's 11 years old.

Well, the VW dealer in my area is atrocious, I avoid the dealership at all costs and take my Bug to an authorized repair person who is not connected to the dealership.

The Volkswagen Company itself has been great. I have had two loans directly through VW Credit and have no complaints at all.

As for the cars, they are so well built and dependable that you likey won't need your dealer much past the purchase anyway!

It really doesn't matter how good customer service is when the product itself is so bad. Lots and lots of complaints about the new VW vehicles.

Example:
• VW Fined $1.1 Million for Clean Air Violations
• VW Admits Sludge Problems

Volkswagen comes and goes. Thanks to some very creative styling, it had been in one of its "up" periods but the company's disgraceful refusal to deal with defective ignition coils in half a million of its cars should put VW back on the blacklist for anyone concerned with auto safety and corporate responsibility. Nor has its delayed admission of engine sludge problems done much to win it any plaudits.
