If yahoo answers has a check spelling icon that is so easy to use, then why do people have such atrocious spelling ?

Because you are a hypocrite and cannot even spell "people" "have" "lousy" and "spelling" in your question.

I don't think its that people don't know how to spell. It's just that they are either too lazy or too slow typists to type out everything and use good punctuation/spelling/grammar.
