"Highball" is a actually a particualr catergory of glassware. In some places, highballs are the same as "chimney" Basically a tall glass. The term is commonly used in the US to refer to all drinks that are served in this type of glassware. Classic examples are gin tonic, rum & coke, scotch & water and many more.
Cocktails covers just about any drinks with combinations of liquor, mixers, juice served in anything from stemwares, short tumblers, curved hurricanes to coconut shells.
Some classic cocktails in their usual serving glasses are
Martinis & Manhattan - stem martini glass
Margarita - Hurricane glass
Mai Tai - Pineapple shell
Pina Coloda - Coconut Shell
Long Island Iced Tea - highball or chimney
You can probably put it this way. All highballs are cocktails but not all cocktails are highballs.

Agreed. Piercing children's ears (unless their old enough to ask for it) is dumb. Circumcision of the male is done for hygienic reasons, female is just mutilation. Lots of it also has to do with the culture, and who is one to say their culture is better than others. I have a Rottweiler who came to me as a puppy with a docked tail. Docking the tail in Europe is illegal and will cause a forfeit in any Canine Champion Breed. While I myself would never have chosen to have her tail docked, the fact that she does not have a tail (she has a little nubbin that does wag and I love it!) is very very convenient. Those rope-like tails whipping back and forth knock stuff all over the place, not to mention if they whack you it doesn't feel good.

highball is a drink that is usually scotch, bourbon, blended whiskey, gin, or vodka mixed with water, soda, sprite, or coke poured over ice.
a cocktail is usually the same but also can include other ingredients.
a highball and a cocktail could be scotch and soda but a cocktail could also be a bloody mary, white russian, salty dog, etc.

"Highball" is a drink in a tall glass. A martini, for example, would not be a highball. A "highball" usually contains whiskey or brandy. "Cocktails" usually contain wine, but at a "cocktail party" you can drink anything.

High ball is the name of the glass the drink comes in. Martinis come in a martini glass. Cognac comes in a sifter glass. There are also glasses called lowballs. Its the name of the glass. In the movie my guess is that it was whiskey.

I always thought of a 'Highball' as whiskey and water/tonic/etc. A cocktail would have more ingredients - martini/pina colata/etc.
