Actually studies show that religion is a very powerful coping behavior, therefore religious people experience less depression, less anxiety, less substance abuse. (See source below). The human mind seems to need religion and that is why I believe atheist often view many non-religious things with religious fervor.
Although some religious people need serious mental help, this isn't in general the rule.

The answer for religious discord is less dogmatism, and more honest reflection of the different religions, and more careful study of the scriptures of the different faiths. A well balanced history education can also help sift through which religions help and which hurt.
Don't forget to take your lithium.:)
