Relgions would like you to believe that. It keeps people in the pews.
In fact, no gods exist. Shed that unnecessary guilt and just live your life.

We are always undeserving, there is nothing we can do to deserve the grace or mercy of God. That is what makes God's love for us so awesome!
Rom 5:8 But God has made clear his love to us, in that, when we were still sinners, Christ gave his life for us.
Notice it does not say "when we joined the church" or "when we gave money"? Neither church membership nor donating money is a prerequisite to going to Heaven despite what the atheists on this site will try to get you to believe.

People that tell you that are just trying to scare you into joining thier institution. When the disciples asked, What must we do to join you in the kingdom? Jesus answered them: You must love God with your heart, mind, and soul, - and be good to your niegboor. (Signifying living in a community). Don't let anyone tell you that you are undeserving of Gods love and care, because you are not following thier "vision", or doctrine.

We are undeserving and unworthy if we do not trust God by asking Him to save us through Jesus, but count on our good deeds and works to make us acceptable.

God has faith in us all the time, regardless of the circumstances. He created us in his image, and loves us more than anything, unconditionally. We may be undeserving, but the scriptures tell us that he still loves us.

The truth is, the only thing we deserve from God is Hell and damnation. I know this sounds harsh, but it is truth. We are sinners with a sin nature. Unless we are covered by the death and resurrection of Christ, God sees us in that sinful condition. Too often, we downplay sin. Sin is an offense to God's holy nature and righteousness. He cannot allow the cancer of sin to enter into Heaven. When one is forgiven through Christ, He doesn't see us in that sinful condition, but as justified. He sees Christ when He sees us. All our "good" deeds without that relationship through Christ are worthless to God.
Isa 64:6 But we are all as the unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as a menstruation cloth. And we all fade as a leaf, and like the wind our iniquities take us away.
This is rather graphic, but it clearly states how God looks upon our "good" deeds when we do them trying to gain favor or salvation through them.

Some religious groups like to teach us that we are pond-scum and that only by belonging to that religion and donating money to their god will we have the slightest hint of a chance of avoiding the eternal damnation that they want us to believe in.

"All of our righteousness is as filthy rags........... but God loved us so much.........that even while we were yet sinners He sent His Son to die for us." God's grace is a gift. You cannot live well enough to earn it. You can't buy it. You can never deserve it. But, He offers it to us anyway because He loves us.
Justice is getting what we deserved.
Mercy is not getting what we deseved.
Grace is getting what we never deserved.
