I drive around 20000-30000 miles every year and only in B class roads. Some A-class roads at times, but Motorways on ly on holidays etc.
So is it a BMW 525D, or 270CDI mercedez ? Comfort and handling is important - I am not that worried about performance.

Go to a garage and do some test drives. A friend of mine has just bought a BMW diesel series 5 and she said its a dream to drive and gets around 45 miles to the gallon, so diesel could be the way to go.

I would have neither both over rated and over priced . Go japanese Honda diesel Accord real good value and more comfortable than both of these. I ditched the Audi bought her in doors a New diesel accord and me a CRV with the money saved got me a Scooby for going proper fast.

I would go for the BMW all the time. The quality of Mercedes is not as good as it used to be. So many of my friends had problems with Mercedes mainly technical and engine failure, the customer service of Mercedes is not great either. One last suggestion: did you ever considered Audi A6 TDI, they are great cars and still strong, dynamic and looks good as well?

Go for the BMW. Better customer service - better build quality. Better all round. Oo to Google and type in "top gear survey" This should answer your question.

I am afraid the Germans have lost the plot. Go Japanese, at the moment they are always at the top of surveys for reliability, comfort, safety and re sale value. Honda, Mazda or Suburu.

Either one would be alright, but with the mileage you are driving, I would go with the Mercedes for driving comfort.
