Yes, I know J. Edgar Hoover was gay. It was well known throughout Washington society and in government circles that Hoover was gay.
Some years ago Vanity Fair published a really good article about Hoover's homosexuality.

My understanding was the pictures of J. Edgar in drag were a KGB smear campaign. As for his being Gay, he certainly was twisted enough to be a frustrated gay man in the closet. I guess the issue is, if J. Edgar Hoover was gay, how did that effect his behavior in light of the many abuses of power he committed as head of the FBI. I do not care if he liked men, but if he was acting out his discomfort with that choice by abusing power it paints an interesting and troubling picture.

Assistant FBI Director Mike Kortan asserted, "Vague rumors and fabrications have cropped up from time to time, but there is no evidence in the historical record on this issue."

"There is no basis in fact for such a portrayal of Mr. Hoover," William Branon, chairman of The J. Edgar Hoover Foundation,
These allegations spun by an author ofquestionable repute and sensationalized writings were "based" upon information provided during a paid interview of an unreliable individual with past convictions for perjury...
To discount the truth and portray a sexual relationship between Mr. Hoover and Clyde Tolson would truly be a miscarriage of the facts and overshadow the many contributions of Mr. Hoover...
While they may not have been perfect in all respects, Mr. Hoover and Clyde Tolson were dedicated public servants and do not deserve to be maligned on completely unfounded
****
Cartha "Deke" DeLoach, a former top aide to Hoover, told DiCaprio, "...I never saw any evidence of it whatsoever."
The 91 year old continued, "I traveled with him, I ate in his home and he in mine. I knew Clyde Tolson to be Mr. Hoover's companion and best friend. When you are somebody like Mr. Hoover, I guess you need somebody to talk to.

According to G. Gordon Liddy, one of the actual federal agents to go and "secure the site" after Hoover's death, there was nothing about his living area or posessions that made him think J Edgar was "Gay Edgar" lol No photos of naked men, no gay letters, nada.
I suspect the whole gay smear was just a way for Liberals to take vengeance against a man they hated who also was unmarried.

I think it's pretty well-established that his longtime FBI aide Clyde Tolson was his gay lover. I've heard from reliable sources that J. Edgar liked wearing red dresses, feather boas, and mules.

Never knew the man and not knowing someone does not give the right to someone else to determine what kind of person they were. When all we have to rely on is supposition and rumor it might be best to let it go.

Well, he did like to dress as a woman sometimes. So I think that would be close. I always thought he was just by looking at pictures of him.

Yup! I used to live in Wash, DC & it was pretty much general knowledge. He had a "best friend" & haven't you heard about his being found in a red dress? I would imagine you could find out more about him on the Internet.

Yes he's gay. Back when he was alive no one knew it. ( Of course his close friends knew) But he's gone now so just let history judge him.
