No. Homophobes like Ted Haggard that marry yet secretly engage in gay sex is what hurts marriage.

Marriage started out as a civil contract, like a business partnership, and had no religious overtones at all. The idea that it is a sacrament, created by God, is a fairly recent and localized phenomenon, going back no more than 15-16 centuries and restricted to cultures influenced by Judeo/Christian dogma. That being the case, marriage can be legitimately defined as whatever the people going in want it to be. Same sex, plural, line, open, even temporary marriages have be successfully used in various cultures throughout history. If two atheists want to enter a legal partnership, how does that affect anyone else?

No. Humans have been "Marrying" in some form or other for hundreds of thousands of years, long before monotheism arose. As for the "sanctity" of marriage, that only exists in the minds of people who consider it sacred, in a religious sense.
Atheists, IMO, have commitments that are more pure, if anything, since they're not "commanded" by a "god" to respect and honor one another. They choose to do it our of commitment and love. These are higher reasons than the teachings of any religion.
The person who stated earlier that atheists have the lowest divorce rate was correct (21%, according to the U.S. Census Bureau, compared to 30% in Jews and 27% in Christians).
The site below further states: "The Associated Press computed divorce statistics from data supplied by the U.S. Census Bureau and the National Center for Health. They showed that the highest divorce rates were found in the 'Bible Belt'. "Tennessee, Arkansas, Alabama and Oklahoma round out the Top Five in frequency of divorce...the divorce rates in these conservative states are roughly 50 percent above the national average" of 4.2/1000 people."
So, as far as "sanctity" goes, looks like atheism is best for marriage and being a born-again, southern Christian is WORST!

Depends on the definition of "Marriage".
If you mean "civil marriage" - no - it hurts nothing. I know many good, loving, civilly married atheist couples.
If you mean "the Sacrament of Holy Matrimony" - then - yes - this can be a problem.
More than a problem, because a true atheist cannot, by definition, make a proper Sacramental Intention. It is a cause for invalidity and nullity.

Do you think that people didn't have ceremonial "marriages" until the idea of God popped into their head? Studying the wilful ignorance of the theist is a truly inspiring and eternal pursuit.
Marriage, you see, is one of those things people DID, and then the relgious bullies came along and said WE'LL HAVE THAT! Well, you can't have everything.

Well last I heard Buddhist get married too. Buddhist don't believe in God, and the Buddhist religion was around for thousands of years before Christianity. Why do you claim it your religion that has invented the marriage contract?
