Or even acquaintances, in real life?

There's a lot of stridency here, a lot of pushy behavior in regards to religion.

If you wouldn't be like that in person, why are you like that here?

Not surprisingly, the people who *are* really strident didn't even answer the question.

I think because here it is where people "get that out of their system."

All the things you CAN'T say at the Thanksgiving table, when sister is spouting nonsense about the rapture. You say here.

I also think, perhaps, it serves as a testing ground for ideas. It is used as a way of "see how this works. If I say THIS to them...will THAT get through?" That sorta thing.

Reasons for being strident here are:

They cannot do this in real life, hence they do it here because when no one knows who they are it becomes convenient to be the real person so could be this is their reality.

Some are strident in real life in order to be authentic, they do not fear rejection, because they have a mind set already to speak up what they feel is true.

I've been known to get into some pretty "strident" discussions in real life, as well. My husband is agnostic, so we have some very interesting discussions! We're respectful of each others' beliefs, even if we don't share them, and that makes it fun and enlightening.

I hope I'm not one of the pushy ones! But I come here as religion never gets discussed by anyone where I live, most the population is atheist, but I do have conversations with my hubby about it, but we believe the same things really although I'm Pagan and he's atheist!

I'm really the same - I come here to do what I do everywhere else. Promote atheism and freethought - the world needs advocates like that if it ever wants to pull itself up from the abyss of dark age thought.

I am the same here as I am in person.

I believe that everyone comes across more pushy here because we can not see body language, facial expressions or hear voice inflection.

No one can punch you on a website. That's why.

But I'm exactly the same here as I am in the real world.

"I yam what I yam and that's all that I yam"

Popeye the Sailor.

I don't think that I'm particularly "strident" here. At least I don't try to be.

I'm.....logical.
