and peach preserves growing mold? Did I get food crumbs in them or what?

They have been opened about a month. My store bought preserves last forever and I don't think they have anything any different in them - fruit, pectin and sugar.

You may not have boiled the jars long enough or perhaps left the bleach out of the sterilization. Many people leave out the bleach thinking it will taint the food but the amount is so negligible you never know it's there but the mold is tell tale it's not. Could also be the wax used to seal was past shelf life and shrank away leaving airspace for the mold to get in. I have heard that if you put 2 tablespoons of brandy or whiskey in the preserves while cooking it helps impede spoilage but have never tried this myself. Better Luck Next time!

Maybe, and maybe you left them out too long on the counter and perhaps they are just too old. Once opened unless refrigerated they spoil like everything else in a jar or can.

How long have they been inthe fridge. It is possible you got crumbs in the jar. Usually it is time.

was the utensils wet when you used to scoop up the preserves? this could be one of the contributing factor.
