You are right to want a golden retriever. They are beautiful, and so intelligent. They are loving dogs and look at you with such
love and intelligence.

I'd go for the Golden. Golden Retrievers and Labs are both hunting dogs. Golden's are generally- but not necessarily- less hyper than labs. Shelties might be nippy around rambunctious children.
Then again, if this is more about what kind of dog your sister wants, a Sheltie would be great for her and you can always protect the Sheltie from the grandkids when they come over.

The best criteria for dog selection is intelligence...it makes it very easy to train them, and you have a foundation for an excellent relationship. All three of your choices are intelligent dogs. Here are my thoughts on them. A Golden Retriever has long hair...not as easy to care for, and takes a long time to dry when wet (remember, they are water dogs). Also, the Retriever has been over bred for the past 10 or so years, and you have to be very careful about temperment and health. A sheltie is a fairly high strung dog, and certainly does not meet your father's 'big dog' criteria. The lab is your best bet (by my way of thinking) by a long shot. Short hair is easy to maintain, they can be big and athletic and loyal to a fault. I've had many breeds, but the Lab is and always will be my favourite. Good luck...and enjoy!

Both Goldons and Labs very intelligent. I have a black lab named Zoey and I trained her all her obed. commands in less then a year. And she knows them,
This is why I think labs are the best:
General Appearance
The Labrador Retriever is a strongly built, medium-sized, short-coupled, dog possessing a sound, athletic, well-balanced conformation that enables it to function as a retrieving gun dog; the substance and soundness to hunt waterfowl or upland game for long hours under difficult conditions; the character and quality to win in the show ring; and the temperament to be a family companion. Physical features and mental characteristics should denote a dog bred to perform as an efficient Retriever of game with a stable temperament suitable for a variety of pursuits beyond the hunting environment.

The most distinguishing characteristics of the Labrador Retriever are its short, dense, weather resistant coat; an "otter" tail; a clean-cut head with broad back skull and moderate stop; powerful jaws; and its "kind," friendly eyes, expressing character, intelligence and good temperament.

Above all, a Labrador Retriever must be well balanced, enabling it to move in the show ring or work in the field with little or no effort. The typical Labrador possesses style and quality without over refinement, and substance without lumber or cloddiness. The Labrador is bred primarily as a working gun dog; structure and soundness are of great importance.
Wow, tired fingers, lol,
Shelties are good to , but you have to groom them about every month or so.
Good luck and hoped I helped!

Labs or goldens are great for hunting. My aunt and uncle have a sheltie and its sweet, but kinda high strung. I have a lab and she is great with my 11 month old daughter. Very gentle. A lot of it is how you train the dog. If you buy purebred, definitely research the breeder. Especially for the larger dogs. Make sure no hip displasia run in any of the blood lines.

They're all great breeds for their own reasons. The lab and golden are both retrievers, so they will be very similar and both would be good hunting dogs. Shelties are herding dogs. They're small and energetic and they love to play. www.dogbreedinfo.com is a great site where you can read about different dog breeds to figure out which one will be best for you and your family.

If you get a sheltie, be mindful of where you get it - I've known poorly-bred shelties that were just neurotic terrors, hyper and prone to biting. Not ALL shelties, mind you, but enough that I'd be wary of where I got one.

My personal preference would be to go to a rescue group that keeps its dogs in foster homes, so you have an idea of how the dog behaves in a family environment.

I have a chocolate lab she is just the best. I have 3 Small children 5,4,2 and they have been rough on her Lol but she has never once snapped at them. They are a little hyper to so they go with the flow of our busy household. Golden's are good too very loving and sweet hard call.

I had a retriever at one time and he was an awesome dog, though he was an outside dog.

Had a yellow lab and he was just dumb. Labs are that way---friendly, cuddly but dumb. They are trainable but in every day things---dumb. But great with kids.

Shelties are UBER smart and love to be around ppl and are great with kids.

I have a sheltie and love her! Shelties are SUPER smart and very easy to train. Only thing bad about them is that they shed a lot.
