I think its a wonderful idea...and lucky you for finding a 1 1/2 year old!!! Puppies are cute and adorable...but a ton of work. And if you find a young dog, you can build as much of a bond as you would with a puppy. Please remember that dogs LOVE to WORK! Take one half hour each day and work on commands. You will be amazed at how much they love doing it and pleasing you. Your bond with be unbreakable. Enjoy...labs are THE BEST!!!

I own a 2 1/2 year old Black lab. Just make sure they get plenty of exercise. If your dog fetches, do that with them. That seems to wear my dog out the fastest. Plus they absolutely love it. Keep in mind also if you live near water, chances are if they are not on a leash they will make a beeline for it. They are definitely water dogs. Leashes are an excellent idea. If he pulls a lot, buy a choke chain. Leave it on only for walks. Its a gentle reminder of who is in charge of the walk.
All in all they are wonderful companions. Loving and sensitive and absolutely wonderful with our 11 month old daughter. When my husband and I get a larger yard we are going to get a buddy for my dog. I definitely recommend a lab to anyone.

Make sure you feed him well, love and prasie him much. I have one. He is so smart because I have always talked to him as if he was human(no baby talk either). He's an excellent watch dog...so I buy him treats. Never scold him for something he could not avoid(like throwing up in the house). Treat him the way you would want to be treated. My lab is my best friend. He's 10 now and showing signs of getting older. But he has been my best 'bud'....and I will grieve deeply when he is gone.

Oh, if you happen to be a very busy person...don't get him. They need love and attention. But if you have the time, I bet he will show you how happy he is to belong to you.

Labs are excellent dogs but they need a place to run and oversee, like a fenced yard. I personally would not keep on a leash for most of the time. My lab was the best dog I ever owned, and miss him dearlly. Treat them good and they will treat you great, very affectionate and supersmart.

Labs are great. I have three. A one and half year old and two 10 week olds. They are the greatest. So loyal and low maintaince. You have to keep them active and have LOTS of toys or they will chew all your stuff up. Try Pig ears and the smoked cow bones and knuckles. they love them!! Good luck!!

I wouldn't BUY a dog that is not a puppy... A small adoption fee is okay, something around $100 or so... you can find thousands of dogs in need of homes at www.petfinder.com these dogs are actually homeless and some may be euthanized unless they find a home.
