No, I've never heard of it....
They do have special seatbealt harnesses though. They would be a lot easier then a carseat and you wouldn't have to take them out of your car every time you want to use the backseat.

i haven't found a car seat that is safe, but i have found seat belt harnesses. any good pet shop will have them, they come in various sizes. we bought one for our medium sized dog - cost was about $40.00 plus taxes.
you put the harness on the dog and on the top of the harness, [on the dog's back, between 'shoulder' blades' roughly], is a space to slide the vehicle's seat belt through and you then buckle the seat belt as you normally would. easy, fast and comforting for both you and the dogs.
at first he didn't care for wearing it, now, when we get in the car he sits at 'attention' and waits for you to put the harness on. if we are only going a few blocks and are tempted not to bother he whimpers and gives you the 'paw' until you give up and put the harness on him. he seems to feel more secure with it on.
we leave it on him when we leave the vehicle and put him on the leash. when we get home the harness comes off and goes into the glove box so its ready for next time.
it makes our 'family' drives more pleasant as i am not worrying about the dog if a sudden stop has to be made!
i can't believe it took us so long to find such a great item!

I have a carseat similar to the one you describe for my 5lb Bichonpoo. It is FANTASTIC. At first when I put her in it she would cry she wanted to ride in my lap. But I ignored her whining and when she was quite I praised her. Now she loves the seat and takes naps during our car trips. I feel safe knowing that she is secure in the car particularly in the (god-forbid) event of an accident.

The Mental Picture is just "Hilarious!!!" I'm sorry, I know your trying to do a good deed, but, I dont think dogs, like to be bound in any kind of way.. Our dog, just loved to hang his head out the window, and enjoy the fresh air. When we were kids, my dad would take us on outings up in Oregon, out in the woods, and on our way, all 7 of us kids would sit in the back of dads, truck, along with our dog, and sometimes one of us, would get downwind of her,and her slobber would get all over us, and totally gross us out, but we just loved to watch her go back & forth from side to side, of dad's truck. She was family, and we would never think to restrain her in anyway!! But, we just had one dog, and that was the 60s....Times are a changin' now, so wtith 3, I dont know, I'd still let them be free, just train them, too stay in the back-seat, not the front. Our dog was a good dog, he knew how to mind us, whatever we trained her to do.. And dogs are easy to train, more so than you think... good-luck, to you! And Happy Bird Day, to you & your dogs, and family!! Smile!!!
