What experience do you have in bars as working on a bar and running a bar are very different. However there are many ways to go about it...

Whatever you do you'll need to get a certificate for personal license from the BII (british institute of inkeepers) which you should be able to get at a local collage for £100 odd and use that to apply for a personal license from your local authority.

Next you need to decide do you just want to run one? In which case you're best off joining with a chain, whitbread, Mitchells and Butler or whatever. You could get in as an assitant manager and as long as you're willing to move around within the companies you could move up to general manager within 2 years (if you're good enough)

If you want to run a non chain pub you still need to find if it's leasehold or freehold as many local pubs are still brewery owned and you're paying rent for them from the pub. In my opinion this is a bad place to be as you're tied in heavily to buying the brewery's own beers at their prices. You know that cheap local pub? That won't be leasehold. Freehold is the way foreward, but to get a decent freehold pub you're looking £600k or over so you'd best have a damned good business plan to get funding for that.

Best bet is to buy "the caterer and hotel keeper" magazine they have places for sale in the back and will help you keep your finger on the pulse of the hospitality industry.

Enrol on "Bii" National Certificate for Personal Licence Holders course first. See their website for more info. (real easy BTW!)

If you're looking to just manage a pub rather than own one and are definitely sure you're ready for it then check out different brewery websites (i work for Enterprise Inns) Part of their websites are usually dedicated to new recruits!

It's hard though and as a couple you'll find it a strain but it's definitely worth it. Running a pub is a lot harder than working one so don't go into it blind.

Need any more advice just ask! Hope this has helped.

Have a look at the link below: its Sidney Phillips, the pub brokerage, but they're got some useful guides on their site.

Other brokerages include Fleurets and Christie & Co, which will give you an idea of prices, links below.

I'm in the process of getting one myself (again, after a 6 year break!) so good luck.

Do you have an associates or bachelors degree in business management? If you don't I wouldn't open up a bar or anything... they're one of the hardest businesses to run because of insurance, financial reasons, trustful workers, not getting money cheated from you, many issues to deal with... If you don't know how to get a business started then obviously your not capable of running one.
