It is a religion in that it is the primary inspiring belief system of a large number of people.
The intense conviction, the ordering of one's life according to this belief, the enthusiasm and proselytizing, even inspirational songs such as marxism gave rise to, all mark materialisticism (usually called materialism, but I like your construction) as being religious.
It has many expressions in many cultures, and has found its way into other religions as well.
