Your best bet is a complete reformat and reinstall. Windows XP uses a different file system (NTFS) than Win98 (FAT32). While XP can run on a FAT32 drive, it will be much happier and more stable with it's native filesystem.

Back up all your important files to another drive or to external media (DVD-R's, flash drives, etc) and boot with the WinXP CD. Select a new installation and delete all existing partitions. Windows will then format the drive and install a fresh copy.

I wouldn't use the upgrade; from 98 to XP is too big a jump. A pc built to take 98 probably won't run XP happily.
You need 20 gigs of hard drive space for the operating system, plus at least 40 extra for programs, and at least 512 mb RAM, preferably 1 gig.

If you check at http://www.microsoft.com and search there'll be a page somewhere that explains the minimum specs needed for XP pro. Check your system is up to it before splashing out.

If you decide to go ahead, I agree that you need to wipe and format the hard drive and do a complete fresh install, not an upgrade.

As a rule of thumb don't do it. Unless you have upgraded your computer, it will probably grind to a halt with the Windows XP Professional installed.

Get yourself a new computer or make do with the one you've got.
