I worked in pubs and restaurants for over 20 years. I just got tired of swallowing my pride when nasty trashy people treated me like crap. My husband owns a construction company and makes a very comfortable living. I'm running a Fine Wine and Spirit Shop now , but due to the loss of tips I make half what I did and I work a lot harder. But I don't miss it. At 43 years old if some little brat came in and said "oh no, a martini is supposed to be vodka" to me again I think I'd snap. Just imagine me as the psycho chic from the movie 'Waiting'.

Worked in the restaurant business for 10 years, recently got another job, (8-5), sometimes wish still waited tables, like going home with $$ in my pocket that I didn't have when I got there. Never had to work doubles or pick up shifts just to make the rent though, a lot of my ex co-workers (single usually) at Red Lobster do the same thing that you do, but thats part of being single, enjoying life is what it is all about!! Have Fun!!

The quick money, lack of real responsibility, and the fact the you can go to work ridiculously hungover and it not mattering were definitely fun. I do miss the interactions with some of the staff, but the profession drives you to drink, heavily. Every restaurant has at least one lifer that is cut-throat and has no problem screwing everyone else out of money. Although my social life has taken a hit from having a 9-5 job, my liver thanks me. Not working 14 hour shifts on Thanksgiving, Mother's Day, Easter, New Years, Etc is nice too.

I waited tables once, and I really liked having money every day. Made eating and feeding the family easier. I would not care to repeat the experience, how ever, it doesn't really pay enough for what you have to put up with.
Housekeeping jobs the same opinion. Work your tail off for minimum wage with no tips, for 9 - 11 hours a day, no thanks.

I used to own a restaurant, and I still sort of miss the personal interaction. A desk job didn't work for me because it was so quiet and uptight. So if I could work lunches again, that would be so much fun, and I wouldn't have the stress of ownership anymore!

Yes, other than now, I hate people. I would do it again thought, for the money. I have a college degree in Political Science, but it is as good as useless. Sometimes I would like to go back, just to pretend I'm clueless, and can't afford school, so people will give me bigger tips.

consider a "real" job that has more of the characteristics you like
(high risk, commission, late nights, etc.)
perhaps stock broker or
real estate agent or
car salesperson or
manage or own a bar yourself.
or a restaurant.
