I know that I am probably outgunned using this calibre on a yote, but my question is which load (manufacturer and gr) would be best if I am going to use this gun on coyotes. I have heard that the 20 gr cci tnt is the best penetrating and retains more of its mass, however the hornady v-max 17 gr are supposed to be good too. Will the V-max penetrate a rib or skull out to 100yds, or should I use the less explosive tnt round? or another round perhaps?

I prefer the v-max it shoots alittle flatter, I don't know how big your yotes are, but ours are only about thirty pounds. We hunted them for years with .22 and.22 mags, until they came out with the .17.
I killed a 108# Mountain Lion with my .17 1n 2005.

With a .17 HMR i could shoot for the top, and on condition that I knew i ought to pull it off. i've got taken them with a .22LR at 19 yards with a dome shot. yet me and that gun have been ineffective on at one hundred yards. in case you do shoot for vitals you may result with a runner which will circulate slowly off into the woods and die, or his den. Get a .223 or a 22-250 the two are proper for coyote looking (could no longer ask for a extra suitable predator around!) you are able to probable get on much cheap out of your community broking. i recently bought a clean stevens kind two hundred in .223 and might that even take out a yote! EDIT--- Sorry Randal, yet you are going to be misinformed. A .17HMR has extra capability then a .22LR and that i've got in my opinion positioned them down with a headshot from my kind 597. A .17 HMR could circulate with the aid of 2 coyotes heads positioned side by utilising side.

I'd probably use the CCI varmint loads for the 17 hmr.

I'd up it bud.I'd go with a 223 ideally.Not a lot of recoil,better range,reloadable cases,better bullet choices.Our coydogs are 30-50 pounds.If you want to still use the rimfire,go with a .22 Mag.

.17 HMR is fine. Although I use .223. It will do a better job and even a bit cheaper to shoot.
