I just recently got a two year old female Maltese that will be an indoor dog. I have two outdoor dogs, one is a husky and the other is a chow/german sheppard mix. When Izzy (the Maltese) goes outside, she starts barking and growling at the other two dogs and acts very territorial. What can I do to fix this problem?

You need to introduce them properly a good idea would be take them on neutral ground away from the house. Put her on a lead and take her to the dogs (one at a time) in time she'll soon quieten down.

They are bigger than her and all new to her so shes just a little intimidated and by barking its her way of saying dont come near me, you need to let her know they won't harm her and they are friendly.
Good luck she sounds a character..

You are exactly right, Izzy is being territorial regarding the outside dogs. Give her time to adjust. Definitely go outside with her so that she does not start something that the other two will finish. Just use lots of patience but be prepared to intervene.

Have you ever watched the show "The Dog Whisper"? It is on A&E and is an excellent show on dog behavior. I believe there is a DVD by the star of the show, Cesar Millan. He has a way with dogs that is amazing. Maybe his DVD can help. Here is the website that you can purchase the DVD. Good luck with Izzy.

Keep her on a leash when you bring her outside. Every time she tries to be aggressive (bark) lightly tug her (and say shoosh, no, etc.) to redirect her attention to you and not the other dogs. Socialize her more frequently with the other dogs. It will take time but well worth the quiet in the long run.

How old are the other dogs? Younger than your new dog? If so, maybe she is trying to show she is the "Alpha' female. As well she should be! ;)

Let them figure it out. But you will need to be on hand to supervise. Don't shelter one from the other or you will just escalate the problem.
