You can't, but if you have a good antivirus program, it will scan all downloaded files, as soon as they enter into your computer. Here you have some good and free antivirus programs:

You can't scan a file before you download it. Antivirus programs don't work that way. However, if you have any of the new antivirus software such as norton they scan files as they are being downloaded and once the download is complete. They even scan within compressed (zipped) files.
The best way to keep yourself safe is to make sure your computer has all the new security patches, service packs, and has a decent antivirus program like Norton that is updated.
You're taking chances everytime you download something from an unknown source, but the above tips will reduce your risk.

If you set up a limited account and use that to access the internet, you download to the desktop. AVG or Avast! anti virus will scan as you download.
You then right click on the file, and your anti virus, anti spyware and anti adware should be in the right click context menu. Use each of those to scan the files, it takes about a second.
Then drag them to the My Docs folder.
Software can't install on a limited account; if you do accidentally download a virus most of them will have trouble installing across the system. So you can just delete the account, then set up another one.
There's a full list of security freeware on my blog.

given which you suggested you're only downloading songs, you have to be ok. it relatively is the flicks (fantastically .wmv's) and utility that could reason issues. i've got for my area by no skill had a difficulty with Limewire. just to be risk-free nevertheless, get your self some antivirus utility in case you do not have any. Avast! and AVG unfastened are the two large and unfastened (I run the two).

The files do have to be on your machine before any AV software installed on it can check them. However, they would then be quarantined or deleted before they could actually do anything.
