If marriage is so sacred, why not make it against the law for atheists to marry?

Marriage, as defined by the government, is already different than any definition by any religion. No religion really accepts that a judge can fill in for a priest. So, the whole "keeping marriage sacred" through making laws is already on shaky ground. It's really not the government's business to enforce any religious tenets. That's for the religions to decide.

And, yes, some religions do not allow cheating or divorce (even though their "holy" books are rampant with it). However, it is also perfectly legal in most governments.

Marriage is sacred. But as far as politics is concerned, marriage is also a tradition, an institution, not just a religious ceremony. The fact remains that in America the majority rules. Most Americans feel marriage is one man and one woman. We the people want to decide that, not some religious politician. So why should we let them decide if divorce is ok, if it's just based on morals? Let the people decide these things.

Actually, it used to be illegal to cheat and extremely hard to get a divorce. I knew some people who went to get a divorce, and they had to go before the judge and he looked at the facts of the request and he could say yes or no to the divorce. If he said no, they had to stay married. This was before the liberal politicians and activist judges took control of the country. At one point in American history, if you were caught in adultery, you were branded with a big A in your forehead so people would know what you had done. Realize that this was considered lenient compared to the stoning you would have received in Old Testament times. Maybe that's why we have so much cheating and divorce nowadays. We are just too lenient.

To make divorce illegal would be irresponsible, you should be able to terminate any contract that you agree too, if this was not the case then anyone could make a slave of you and this is supposed to be a country of freedom, and cheating is illegal it's just that in our culture the punishment is monetary in favor of the non-cheating spouse.

The reason they don't make it illegal to cheat or divorce is because any person claiming to be Christian and at the same time being a politician really isn't a true Christian. Jesus to his followers to be "no part of the world." That certainly includes politics. I wouldn't expect any "Christian" politician to try and legislate anything that true Chistianity embraces.

Because if it was made illegal to cheat and divorce, 78% of those politicians would be incarcerated. Why would they pass a law that actually affects them?

Some situations require divorce. Especially if life could be lost. And most places (if not all) cheating is illegal.

In some states there are still written old laws on the books regarding unfaithfulness in marriage. They are not usually implemented.
