Go here and read the breed standards for each and learn something yourself!! They are 2 different breeds and not just because of coat length either!!

Labs are generally smaller, with shorter hair. A yellow Lab is lighter.
Both like water. A Lab can be a good watch dog and protector. A Golden Retreiver will welcome them in and carry the loot to the car.
Both are great pets. Goldens are prob a little more popular as a pure pet for friendship, and cost a bit more. Labs are easier to come by in different colors.
Both shed.

Both dogs are similiar in color. Labs and retrivers are both excellent swimmers and "retreiving" dogs. the retreiver had a long coat while the lab has short coarse hair. If you are thinking about making the dog an inside dog, neither of these breeds are good for that. My brother has a lab, dad the retriever. Both breeds are immature mentally for along time, meaning they act like puppies forever, also they both like to chew, dig and want attention. Both dogs are very lovable and great with kids. I love both of the dogs that we have in the family, and in my opinion the lab is a bit more low key ( not much though).
talk to a vet a pet store or owners of these breeds and make sure they are going to fit into your lifestyle.
good luck

A golden retriever usually has longer hair and a slight upward curl to their tail.
Yellow labs have shorter hair and a straight tail. They also have a more rounded head, and are pretty high-strung.
We have an 11 yr old female that is half and half, and she is a perfect mix.
Very affectionate, loyal, smart dogs. Ours had many years as an awesome bird dog. She is retired now because of artheritis.

do you know what a black lab is? well a yellow lab is the same thing but yellow. A golden retriever has longer hair and is a little smaller in size but is still a large dog. Both breeds are highly energetic and need alot of attention

The most obvious difference to the average person is that a golden has long hair and a lab has short hair.
